Title: Drug Laws: The subject of mind-altering drugs can spark very strong emotions. It's not easy to have a dispassionate discussion about them but let's try.
Drug prohibition is largely though not wholly a 20th century phenomenon prompted in the US, the spread, even though knowledge of the harm drugs can do stretches back millennia. Plato's last work, The laws, begins with a long analysis of and prescription for the problem of binge drinking at festivals. By contrast his contemporary Euripides attacked prohibition in The Bacchae even while depicting a shocking alcoholic blackout. Two thousand years later Shakespeare showed a shrewd understanding of alcoholism in the character of Michael Cassio in Othello. Modern times have nothing much to add in this way: when it comes to drug-taking, some people are more susceptible than others. However, social conditions also play a significant role as the growth in peyote cults among native American peoples shows.
